Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte – the strange world of luxury mobile phones
I’ve been holding off on doing a blog post about this particular mobile phone for a while now, since, basically, I’m not especially bothered about it. I couldn’t particularly find an angle, other than, “Whoa, how much???” (You’ll see why in a minute.)
But then, the angle came to me, earlier today, while I was writing the post about the Nokia 1100 Club. It hit me, right there.
Luxury mobile phones actually normally don’t do much more than a Nokia 1100 can do… so, what is it about luxury mobile phones that makes people think paying much more, for less features is a good thing? And with that in mind, is the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte worth it?
For comparison, we need to look higher up the scale of luxury mobile phones. We need to look at the Vertu series, long-hailed as the most exclusive range of mobile phones on the planet. And we need to look at their price tags, because they are, quite seriously, ludicrous. I saw one on their site, once, that was covered in platinum, and cost about £14,000!
Surely they must be some super-powered mobile phones to cost that much, right? Well, no, until recently, they could be best described as “a 3310 with a fancy hat on”.
Then there’s that Tiffany mobile phone I blogged about way back in February. At the current exchange rate, that costs roughly £53,000 to buy! And once again, the features-list is rubbish. It’s enough to make you wonder who’s buying these mobile phones… I’m guessing premiership footballers. They value looks over brains…
All that neatly(ish) leads us onto the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, Nokia’s newest luxury mobile phone. And when you compare it to those price tags, it doesn’t seem bad at all, since it’s rumoured that, sim-free, it’ll come in about the £800 mark. Still, that’s a lot of money, so is it just another 3310 in a hat?
Well, no. They’ve actually packed some properly good features into the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, starting with gesture controls. And if you have no idea what they are, I’ll explain using this Nokia’s big feature: to stop it ringing, and send the incoming call to voicemail, just pick it up, turn it over, and put back on the table, face down.
That is clever.
Still not convinced it’s worth £800, though, especially when, if you want a luxury mobile phone, the standard Nokia 8800 Arte is better looking and much, much cheaper! It’s actually quite an appealing purchase, if you can afford it, and you want it, since it’s a genuinely nice mobile phone, and unlike its predecessor, the 8910i, it isn’t bought exclusively by ticket-scalpers and drug dealers…
The world’s ugliest luxury goods—Vertu Signature Cobr
It is difficult for a designer to come up with a design that all people around the globe think it ugly; and it is still difficult to bring it to the production line, yet, designers from Vertu have made it happened. Lately, Vertu, the luxury mobile phone line of Nokia, has readapted the design of Signature Cobr which received much bad review too years ago. After changing the coiling serpent into an entwining dragon, Vertu has released this design. This latest limited edition mobile phone is named Signature Dragon, and is currently on display in the Wynn Hotel’s Vertu exclusive shop in Las Vegas, United States.

Before this, the coiling serpent design on the keypad and the designer’s fanciful color choices have successfully won Signature Cobr that year’s ugliest luxury mobile phone. And this year’s entwining dragon doesn’t make much significant changes compared with the previous version. The image of Chinese dragon is always high and mighty, yet we can see the dragon on the Signature Dragon in display looks almost like a snake, not a clue of the dragon soul is to be spotted, we can say it is another design for disaster. The price of the Signature Cobr in 2006 is up to RMB300,000 Yuan, with the serpent made in whole diamond and crystal. Although the price of this year’s new version is not yet announced, we can expect it will be even more astonishing. Why People Choose Phone Watches

Luxury Phones Rival Handmade Watches
At Baselworld, the watch and jewelery industry's largest annual trade fair, telephones draped in diamonds and sapphires were displayed alongside traditional wrist accessories. Some included tools to instantly track flights, convert currencies and check the weather.
The luxury unit of the world's top mobile handset maker Nokia, Vertu, displayed sleek telephones ranging from $4,350 to $310,000 at its booth in Basel, a few steps from hotel heiress Paris Hilton's new watch collection, in one of six huge exhibition halls heaving with people.
Vertu President Alberto Torres said many of the company's younger customers were more interested in their mobile phones than their watches, unlike older clientele who show deep loyalty to luxury watchmakers such as Patek Philippe, Rolex or Cartier.
"The phone has a strong association for a lot of young people," he said in an interview on Friday in "The Hall of Inspirations", one of the show's six giant exhibition areas.
Some of Vertu's designs are marketed at busy people whose days may feature "breakfast in London, shopping in Paris and a late dinner in New York," offering a virtual concierge service for help with restaurant bookings and gift ordering.
Others are wrapped in diamond-perforated leather that resists "almost everything from lipstick to suntan lotion," according to promotional material.
Because they are constantly holding their phones, laying them on dinner tables and otherwise flashing them about, Torres said many wealthy people had become increasingly conscious of the image their handsets projected.
"A phone has become an important element of lifestyle. The phone says something about yourself," he said.
Vertu's sales increased by 140 percent last year and should rise another 100 percent in 2007, Torres said, declining to specify a dollar figure.
One of Nokia's smallest but most profitable segments, Vertu is approaching the 100,000 per year mark in numbers of handsets sold, Torres said, noting that overall turnover was in line with many medium- to large-sized luxury watch companies.
"We would be a significant brand in the watch industry (in terms of sales)," he said, while stressing that Vertu did not believe the shift to pricier mobiles would prompt the rich to stop buying high-end watches.
"Our customers tend to have several luxury items," he said.
Like most luxury goods segments, high-end mobile phones have benefited from a surge in the number of millionaires worldwide alongside fast economic growth in countries such as China, India and Russia. Rich people in the oil-producing Middle East have also flocked to status symbols with the recent commodities boom.
Other companies have also entered the luxury mobile field to greet the new clientele. Motorola and designers Dolce & Gabbana have launched a gold-colored version of the best-selling RAZR model, and South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. has helped develop a Prada phone to complement Prada accessories.

Luxury mobile phones gone mad – the UTTERLY vile Vertu Boucheron 150
It’s always fun to do a blog post about luxury mobile phones. You know, the Vertues and Mobiadoes of this world. Basically, it’s fun to see how the other half lives, so we can point and laugh about how overpriced and not-that-nice their mobile phones are.
Well, according to UnwiredView, Vertu have outdone themselves with the new Boucheron 150. Oh, and at this point, I should probably warn anyone reading this that there’s no way this blog post isn’t going to be a rant. Seriously. There may be spit on my chin by the time I’ve finished…
Let’s start with the looks: the Vertu Boucheron is reportedly hewn from a single piece of gold, giving it (theoretically speaking) high-class, exclusive looks evocative of the Boucheron jewellery house that it’s made for. Really, the only reaction I can give to that is… well… I dread to think what Boucheron jewellery looks like if it’s anything like this monstrosity. I mean just look at it. I wouldn’t have thought there was anything in history that’s just inconceivably ugly from every single angle, and I certainly never thought I’d see a mobile phone that fits that description. ‘Who hand-carved this beast?‘, and ‘How are they loose in society?‘ are the questions we should ask! If ever there was a mobile phone that looks like it’s not just been hit by the ugly stick, but had its face methodically kicked in by the entire ugly forest, it’s this. Seriously, what is so wrong with a mobile phone that’s got straight edges, and why would people want a phone that looks like it involves a car crusher in the construction process?
You don’t see the Nokia N97 needing this kind of stupid design work! Or many other mobile phones, come to think of it. Let’s just say that in the case of this mobile phone, the phrase ’sculpted from solid gold’ could be interpreted, based on the looks, as ‘got a hippo to repeatedly stamp on a lump of gold’.
And the features? Well, what would be the point… it hasn’t got any. Except that Concierge button shared by all Vertu mobile phones, which to me, is proof positive that when you make billions from selling oil (come on, you know that’s who keeps buying Vertu mobile phones), you lose the ability to find information and plan things for yourself.
So, shall we go for an entirely subjective and opinionated conclusion of this little piece? Ah, why not!
If you want a super-powered, awesome Nokia mobile phone, get the Nokia N97. If you want a decent, genuinely pretty, luxury phone, get the Nokia 8800 Arte.
If you live on Mars, or pay 9 billion quid for a pair of socks, or keep tigers as pets, then you are obviously loaded, and therefore, I am open to receiving Christmas presents of, say, Argos vouchers to the value of £17 million.
Hey, come on, it has to be worth a try; anybody who’s seriously considering buying the Vertu Boucheron clearly has more money than sense, so I may be an appealing purchase for them, tooBellperre Unveils New Collection of its Luxury Mobile Phones
